Throughout the next few weeks, we will be showcasing some popular posts directly from our community! This week, our question is about academics: “Should I pursue a graduate degree if my undergraduate GPA was not high?”
Today, we want to highlight one of the initiatives run by the mentors in our community led by Annie Lamei (Med 1, Hamilton) & Daniel Shi (Med 3, Kingston), our CASPer Project Co-Leads on the Mentorship Skill Development Team! The CASPer is an online, situational judgment test assessing one’s decision making process in realistic, hypothetical situations. This can be a daunting obstacle for students who are just starting to navigate the medical school application process.
The MMC’s mission aims to level the playing field of medical school admissions by providing students with easily accessible guidance from our experienced mentors. To improve students’ general knowledge of what the CASPer involves and how to best prepare themselves for the test, the MMC organized a three part initiative for this past application cycle. Our MMC mentors created and recorded their very own practice CASPer scenarios for students to practice answering questions in a low-stakes environment, a great resource that should be accessible to everyone in the medical school application process. Students were then connected to an experienced mentor who was previously in their shoes where they provided feedback on their practice answers and shared their insight on how to navigate the test. Virtual CASPer training workshops were also held where our mentors explained each practice question on the mock exam, providing general tips and tricks on how they would approach different scenarios. During these workshops, some mentees also had the opportunity to answer practice questions out loud and receive real time feedback on how to improve their answers. Mentors are an abundant source of information, having gone through the complex nature that is the medical school application process. The MMC is currently in the midst of planning more CASPer workshops for the next application cycle in hopes of providing more accessible mentorship connections and support to students interested in exploring the world of medicine. |
